===== Logging in to Bede =====
(see https://bede-documentation.readthedocs.io/en/latest/usage/index.html for details)
**The SAFE website** provides authentication services to a large number of HPC facilities so **has options which are not relevant to Bede.**
* Register with your **@newcastle.ac.uk** email address
* Ignore options to 'Login with institutional credentials' and 'upload ssh key' - neither of these is valid for Bede.
* Older documentation may refer to key-based authentication for Bede. This is no longer valid. Only 2 Factor Authentication is valid for Bede.
=== Step 1: One-time Login Account Password ===
https://safe.epcc.ed.ac.uk/ provides a one-use Login Account Password for your Bede Account. N.B. only SAFE accounts //using an **@newcastle.ac.uk** email address// will be approved.
* Click Login accounts and choose your @Bede login name
{{ :advanced:safe-bede-login-account-management.png?nolink&400 | Retrieve the **one-use** Login Account Password for your Bede Account}}
* Check that Status is Active
* Click the red 'View Login Account Password' button to retrieve a one-use password
=== Step 2: First Login to Bede sets up 2 Factor Authentication ===
** First login by SSH only**
When you first login to Bede, or after a password reset, you should use SSH to connect to the machine (rather than x2go). Failure to do this, or to set a new password will require you to go back to Step 1 and click 'Request Password Reset'
* Connect to Bede using ssh @**bede.dur.ac.uk** and the one-use password from Step 1 above
* You will be prompted to:
* Change your password
* Import an MFA token into an app on your mobile device
==== Normal login to Bede ====
Once MFA is set up, instead of Password, will be prompted for:
* First Factor - this is your password
* Second Factor - this is a one-time password code provided by the token in your app
