If you install software yourself, in either your personal home directory, or in a shared group/project directory, you are responsible for complying with any terms and conditions imposed by the license under what that software is distributed.
Some software on Rocket is not licensed for commercial use and must only be used for research or teaching activity. This list can be found in the Advanced Topics area, in the Software List section. If your use of any of these titles does not align with the existing license criteria you must contact the Research Software Engineering team for advice.
The installation and use of Anaconda on Newcastle University HPC facilities is not permitted.
Due to the difficulty in complying with all elements of the Anaconda software licensing restrictions in relation to research activity, and previous litigious activity by Anaconda Inc., the use of Anaconda is not permitted.
You may use https://conda-forge.org/ instead, which has no licensing restrictions on the software sources it is configured by default to use. In all respects other than not being configured to use the licensed Anaconda Inc. repository, this functions identically (provides conda
and python
versions).
The conda-forge software is installed centrally as a module on Comet: module load condaforge
.
Jupyter Hub / Jupyter Notebook is a fully supported application which can be launched from the Open OnDemand portal interface. Users of the HPC facility should not attempt to set up port forwarding or tunnels from the HPC login nodes to Jupyter instances which are running on the HPC (either on the login nodes, or on compute nodes).
This was previously the only (unsupported) mechanism by which Jupyter was launched on our older HPC facility, but it is not permitted to run Jupyter in this way, as the use of the login nodes in this way is contrary to our Acceptable Use policy.
Please launch Jupyter from the Open OnDemand web portal. As per the Acceptable Use policy, unofficial workarounds, long running processes or port forwards may result in your processes being stopped.
