New Software Installation Requests

June 2025: Rocket is End of Life and no new software is being installed prior to decommissioning

There will be a process for centrally installing new software to Comet but this will only start once the system has been tested and all the planned software installed. For planning your work, it is prudent to assume that this process is unlikely to be available before end of 2025.

When the process for new central software requests is started, we can't guarantee to install any piece of software that is requested. Software requests will be assessed for viability of install, and work required versus research benefit. Only when that balance tips in favour of research benefit will software be installed. The team of senior academics who supervise Comet will decide on the policy around software requests, and later on whether to fulfil requests. When the policy is agreed it will be published to the HPC documentation wiki https://hpc.researchcomputing.ncl.ac.uk/dokuwiki/.
