Viewing RDW from other Computers

RDW is mounted on Comet and RDW is automatically available on NUIT managed windows laptops and Virtual Desktop

Viewing RDW from Campus Windows

It is also possible to view and interact with RDW using SAMBA on Mac or Linux laptops, but only when ON the CAMPUS network.
You must be connected to Newcastle University WiFi or wired ethernet port. Eduroam and Guest WiFi will not work.
You can only access a share to which your user already has access permissions

Mounting RDW on Mac or Linux

  • From Mac Go button / Linux file manager
  • Connect to server :  smb://fs-ncl-smb-db.ncl.ac.uk/<path-to-share>
  • Authenticate with your campus username & password
  • Choose volume:  Type a path similar to the path you'd use on Comet, replacing / with -

for example: \rdw\04\myshare on Comet ⇒ smb://fs-ncl-smb-db.ncl.ac.uk/rdw-04-myshare on your laptop

Notes

  • The RDW share will appear as a mounted filesystem, similar to when a USB stick is inserted
  • EJECT the mounted filesystem before leaving campus, leaving it mounted when inaccessable leads to error messages and freezing.
  • This can be useful for browsing and checking that data is present.
  • Avoid large data transfers or data changes as there is a high risk of dropped connections.
  • Never work interactively with data on RDW, always take a local copy.
