Data Policies

Storage Areas

The use of /nobackup is not permitted for long term archival. All users of the HPC facilities are requested to move their data off the system as soon as practicable.

The use of HPC storage (of any type) is not permitted for any activity which is not directly related to the use of the HPC facility itself. It is not a general purpose file storage facility.

Data Retention

  • Data which is stored on the HPC facilities in the /nobackup area shall be subject to removal if the file has not been accessed or modified within 45 days.
  • You will receive a notification email of any files which have identified as meeting the above criteria.
  • You will have one week to remove any files included in the notification email.
  • Files not archived or moved elsewhere after one week will be removed automatically by the HPC system administrators - these are not able to be restored.

Exceptions can be made, in advance, for open-access shared data areas; e.g. for large biological data sets or other static data sources which are shared across multiple users or projects. Please contact Research Software Engineering to speak about arranging a new shared, persistent data area.

Data Curation

Files and data which are stored in a project or group area are considered to be shared and, in the event of the owner of those files leaving the HPC or having their University account removed, any of their files in those areas shall be transferred to the project/group owner upon request.

Files and data held in personal areas (home directories and individual folders under /nobackup) are assumed to contain personal data and shall not be transferred.
