Project Description

The research will regard the numerical simulation of quantum fluid dynamics, namely the dynamics of superfluid helium-4 and Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). The two physical systems require distinct theoretical, and hence numerical, modeling: superfluid helium dynamics is investigated via a Vortex Filament method (integration of Biot-Savart law) coupled to Navier-Stokes equations; the dynamics of BECs are studied integrating the non-linear Schroedinger equation. Particular focus will be put on the characteristics of quantum vortex dynamics.

Software or Compute Methods

The two codes employed have been elaborated in-house and are developed in FORTRAN language, parallelised with openmp and mpi directives. The necessary libraries are FFTW, Netcdf (C and Fortran). Some post processing analysis will be performed employing matlab and julia.
