This project investigates age-related changes in human skeletal muscle, focusing on muscle fibre characteristics, cellular heterogeneity, and the spatial organisation of the muscle microenvironment. The research involves computational analysis of high-dimensional spatial transcriptomics data generated using the 10x Genomics Xenium platform from human vastus lateralis muscle biopsies collected across the adult lifecourse.
HPC resources will be used for large-scale transcriptomic data processing, quality control, cell and muscle fibre classification, gene expression analysis, spatial neighbourhood analysis, clustering, and data visualisation. Analyses will be performed primarily using Python-based bioinformatics tools, including Scanpy and related spatial analysis packages, to investigate molecular and cellular changes associated with skeletal muscle ageing and sarcopenia.
